The Africa I Fell in Love With
When I first came to Africa in 2004, it was still wrapped in mystery. What most of us knew came from National Geographic or Wild Kingdom. The Maasai Mara felt remote. Camps were simple Hemingway-style tents with real beds, bucket showers, and the romance of lanterns under endless stars. There was no Wi-Fi, no social media, and no expectation of instant connection. You simply disappeared into the wild.
Africa Changed… So Did I
Over the next two decades, technology transformed the way the world experienced Africa. Suddenly, remarkable places were no longer hidden. Stunning images spread across Instagram, inspiring more people than ever to explore the continent. It was wonderful to see Africa appreciated, but it also changed the travel landscape.
While many visitors were drawn to the iconic destinations, I found myself searching for something different. My greatest joy was never simply returning to the places everyone knew, but continuing to explore the quieter corners of Africa, the places that still carried the sense of discovery that first captured my heart.
The Next Natural Step
After years of living between Africa and the United States, I gained a unique appreciation for both the expectations travelers bring with them and the realities of exploring one of the world’s most diverse continents. My years in dusty boots, wandering through remote wilderness and tribal regions, gave me a deeper understanding of Africa than the operators I worked with.
Creating Mackay Africa became the natural next step.
What began as designing custom photographic safaris with specialized vehicles and logistics trusted by Nikon Ambassadors and Canon Explorers of Light has grown into a boutique luxury safari company creating immersive journeys for families, friends, photographers, and travel advisors who want something far more personal than a standard safari circuit itinerary.
Still Designing
Looking back, perhaps the path wasn’t so unexpected after all. Before Africa, I spent twenty years designing textiles and clothing.
Today, I design experiences.
Adventures shared between lifelong friends. Journeys that reconnect families. Moments that become stories told around dinner tables and, one day, from rocking chairs.
