I admit I was “Lions on the Kopjes centric” when I spent nearly two weeks in some of the most breathtaking and untamed corners of the Serengeti this past November. Towering granite kopjes, weathered by time and scattered like islands across the golden sea of savanna, became my focal point. These dramatic formations, crowned by prowling lions or sleepy pride members basking under the sun, are as iconic to the Serengeti as its endless horizons.
Some of Africa’s most extraordinary photographic destinations are the ones less traveled, hidden away from the crowds. These untouched gems offer a rare sense of intimacy and authenticity, allowing for a deeper connection with nature and the chance to capture moments that are both unique and fleeting. Having first experienced Africa in an era before the internet and smartphones, I find myself longing for that untamed mystery—a feeling that these remote, quiet places still hold.
One such gem, nestled on the shores of Lake Tanganyika amidst lush rainforests, is Malale, renowned for its remarkable chimpanzee population. The dense foliage and serene surroundings create a perfect sanctuary, allowing these intelligent primates to thrive undisturbed in their natural habitat. Unlike the well-trodden paths of Uganda, which has become a more commercialized and accessible destination, Malale remains a hidden treasure, often overlooked and rarely featured in travel itineraries. This seclusion only adds to its allure, offering an authentic and intimate experience for those fortunate enough to discover it.
