Namibia Adventure Photo Excursion

namibiaCamping

We are self-driving a Landrover in search of the desert elephants, desert Lions, the nomadic Himba Tribe, and to spend a few days in Etosha; an authentic African photography adventure.

Namibia is an amazing place and a destination I have wished to return for many years. The landscape is a dramatic contrast to East Africa, where most of my work has been focused.  This is an exploratory trip to do some of my own work and scout the area to see if it may be possible to do a self-drive adventure photo excursion in 2014!

Adventure Photo Excursions are all about the photograph. These type photo safaris will seek out unique photographic opportunities beyond the classic photo safaris. We will go farther of the beaten path to capture unique and compelling imagery. Photographs difficult to capture on regular photographic safaris due to the remoteness and lack of 4-5 Star accommodations, required for most African photo safaris.

On May 12, 2013, we will pick up our fabulous Landrover in Windhoek and begin our drive up north in search for the desert elephants. The desert-adapted elephant generally inhabit the riverbeds found in the north-west regions of Namibia. These elephants still roam completely free making this an incredible and unique experience. There is a debate amongst zoologist and scientist as to whether these desert dwelling animals should be classified as a different species of elephant. They are adapted to the conditions of the desert moving great distances between feeding grounds and scattered waterholes; they can cover distances of up to 70KM!

We will then head up to Himba land and camp in the more remote villages for about a week. We will immerse ourselves into the unique Himba culture. They are an Ancient tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists. They are tall, slender and statuesque, dressed in traditional skin clothing, unique hair style, and covered in red ochre, butter and resin form the Omuzumba shrub.

On our way back to Windhoek we will visit Ethosia for about three days; famous for their incredible waterholes. It is quite common to have elephants, zebra, lions, and other animals all visiting the same waterhole at the same time! On our last day as we head to the city we will make a stop at the Cheetah conservation Fund. Once back in Windhoek we will be spending a morning with three cheetahs.

I enjoy traveling with other photographers, so when I am scouting an area or not photographing for a specific project I like to extend an invitation for a few other photographers to join me. These trips are for advanced photographers by invitation only. These trips are generally not advertised through my website. I first notify, by a private email, alumni of past tours, workshops, or those who have traveled with me previously. These photographic adventures usually fill from this select list but if an opening remains I will then announce it through my newsletter. If you are interested in this type of photographic adventure, come on one of my tours, attend one of my workshops, or sign up for the newsletter.
